Appropriately called "Black Bear Escape"....

During the summer on the mountain there were 3 different bears visiting different cabins and the scout camp almost every week.  Kathy Dinkel has had 3 different bears visit her at her cabin.  Two have even looked through her windows, knocked down her hummingbird feeder, her hanging plants and ate a bag of apples she left outside when a neighbor in town gave her the bag to feed the deer.  About 7:00 am, I looked out the east window in the loft and saw this bear just walking along "Black Bear Road".  I told Gary he was out there and he went looking for the camera - went out on the loft deck - the bear heard the door open and starting running up the hillside towards the camp when Gary got this picture taken.  He called DNR (Utah Wildlife Fish and Game) got permission to get the hounds on the bears.  Gary finally got a hold of gentleman from Lehi (he has several guys with hounds who like to come out and train the dogs).  They were down here within 2 hours - got the scent and tracked the bear - several miles later - they treed the bear and it was a male, about 2 years old - weighing about 250 pounds.  Two weeks ago one of the cabin owners told us that early in the morning, they had their front door open with the screen door closed - cooking bacon and they saw a bear coming up to the cabin - following the smell - slammed the door closed and scared off the bear.  These bears are just checking out the cabins for hummingbird feeders, garbage that might have been left outside, etc.  DNR said they are just young bears - being kicked out by their mothers this year - our snow levels stayed low this year - so the bears stayed low and learned that the cabins are good places to look for food.  We just need to remember that we are living in the habitat and just be aware of the bears and not get into situations that would put us in harms way.
